Hello friends! I am excited to be back in my sewing room today to sew more Scrap Cabin blocks. And can I just say, “wow!” to all the pretty blocks being shared in the in the Week 1 Chat on Substack? Yay, for connecting easily again!!! I’m loving the ease with which I can find your photos and that we can talk about them in one thread.
Not sure what is going on? We just started the Scrap Cabin sew-along, and it’s totally not too late to join in! Click over to the master sew-along post for all the details. It’s a digital pattern, so you can grab it in a flash and sew right along.
Before we forge ahead with the sew-along, let’s take a moment to swap color ideas. If you’re already off and running with your quilt’s palette - great! However, if you’re having second thoughts or struggling to get this project off the ground, color may be the key to setting things in motion.
Since this is such a straightforward quilt block, don’t be shy to give it your own twist with color ideas. Here are some unique ideas from our community that particularly inspire me today. Enjoy!
2 Colors + Wild Sprinkle
This will be a quilt made up of mostly green and blue. However, Sharon is giving herself permission to throw in a red scrap now and then to break up the analogous palette. What a fun way to balance the aesthetic values of harmony and surprise!
1 Dark color, 1 Light color
Instead of using both colors in the dark value section of the block, Helen has opted to use only navy for the block center and a mixture of low volume and blush for the block outer. It’s a simple, but brilliantly elegant palette.
Low Volume highlight
Shawn has chosen red and pink for her block colors. She uses dark versions of these colors in the block center and pale pink in the low volume block outer. Since red and pink are so similar, this quilt would have a monochromic feel, if it weren’t for the addition of bright yellow highlights. What a lovely, warm glow!
Rainbow
Kristal is making her first rainbow quilt! That’s sure to turn out perfectly delightful. For a 9-cluster throw quilt you could sew the following clusters: red, orange, yellow, lime/grass green, cool green, aqua/teal, blue, purple, magenta/pink.
I’m tempting to sew a rainbow, too! I think I would use black as my center squares because I love black/white with rainbow.
Okay, I am off to sew more blocks for my multicolor Scrap Cabin quilt. I started with the idea of high contrast blocks in complementary colors, but that is feeling too limiting. I’m going to consider combining colors without the complementary rule and see where that takes me.
More soon!
I have a black center planned already! And maybe black cornerstones - Kristal
