Gems in a Row
playing with a quilt layout
Today I finished a big batch of gem blocks for my latest quilt.
I sew, cut and press in batches, adding “snowball” corners to pretty rectangles of Anna Maria Textiles prints. The resulting pointy shape reminds me of a gem stone.
Soothing work, and that’s good because my spirit is not restful lately. It is helpful to do something simple and productive within my control.
Here is what the blocks look like together - one of each print in this fat quarter set. I love how the blue zigzag unifies the work, but I am not sure that the fun fabrics are looking their best in this arrangement.
What if I reorganize them in loose color families? It took some playing to decide where certain prints belong to my eye, but I think I have something here. The first row is soft blue, soft gray and yellow - mostly light values. The second row is darker grays, darker blues and purples. The bottom row is pinks and reds.
Hmm…. what do you think?

Little Fabric Shop
Woohoo!!! The Cotton & Steel Basics fabric collection is on sale now at Little Fabric Shop! These excellent stash builders and all-around “helpful fabrics” show up often in my patchwork projects. Happy shopping!
Now I’ve added more rows and tweaked the block placement just a little more. I think I like it!
Maybe I’ll call this quilt pattern “Gemma.” She feels like a cozy friend.
