Hourglass Curves patchwork
in neutrals + repurposed silk
Such an evocative name - Hourglass Curves. I have named this patchwork for the little hourglass shape at the center of the block. I love that elegant, tipped hourglass with extended curved points. It has a certain chic allure that combines really well with a neutral palette, don’t you think?
In addition to the cream and pale brown silk, I will be using a variety of simple neutral fabrics. Here are some possibilities. Hmmm. It’s hard to tell at this point what is too similar to the cream silk background fabric and what is just right. When sewing an all-neutral quilt, little variations in hue stand out more than you would expect.
So, I’ll just start sewing and find out!

By the way, I am cutting the curves for this block using the Classic Curves ruler (available in Europe at Nanno Creative and in the USA on Amazon). This ruler allows one to cut a variety of drunkard’s path block sizes, which just so happens to be the building block for my Hourglass Curves. It’s not my favorite ruler ever, but it’s doing the job. I wanted a 4” finished drunkard’s path block, and this was already in my ruler stash.
Now, that’s festive. Cheery autumnal cross stitch courtesy of José, one of my bestest Dutch friends. We meet every week for yoga and then discuss parenting, relationships, and our work as creative entrepreneurs over a cup of tea. I’m so lucky to have her in my life!
So, here is a real beginning. What do you think?
It’s pretty subtle, but that should appeal to the recipient. I think that it would benefit from more mid tones prints to bridge the gap between the pale brown and these much paler ivory tones. I’ll see what I can find!

I'm commenting mainly to say: the transition to substack worked perfectly and I'm still following avidly! I hope the silk and the neutrals are an omen for your many transitions and changes: smooth and calm.
Love this pattern and the quilt is just gorgeous. Your friend and her baby will both love it! Rachel, are you going to make this pattern available for us to purchase? TY!
