Hello there! Today I am back into my sewing room after a week and half away on vacation. I feel rested and eager to be creative again, but at the same time a little slow on finding my flow. Can you relate? I think that as I clean up and put things into place, I will rediscover my quilty creative space. Today I’m happy to share some quilts which I had the pleasure of finishing for customers last month. Enjoy!
Flower Checks by Sarah
This Flower Checks quilt has a bold, graphic style. It was sewn by Sarah @cyto.stitch using the pattern from Sarah B Sews.
A quilt made of mainly solid fabrics with a large-scale graphic design begs for modern quilting. Sarah liked my suggestion of Fusion!
Fusion is one of those quilting patterns that quilts up densely. Luckily Sarah didn’t mind. Even though a denser quilting design creates a stiffer quilt, it also significantly boosts the durability. Plus, I find that dense quilting more easily finds its place as a background texture, rather than catching one’s eye.
For a quilt like this, made up of squares in a blocky style, the undulating curves of Fusion add a lovely sensuality.
Christmas Trees by Yvonne
It was Christmas in July when I unpacked this adorable quilt sewn by Yvonne @Papierwerkstatt.
How fun is that??!?! I don’t think that Yvonne used a pattern. Instead it looks like she approached the quilt in a playful manner, using all kinds of red, white and pink prints. The blocks alternate between white or low-volume backgrounds with red or pink trees and vice versa.
I sent Yvonne several festive quilting ideas, as well as something a little different: apple core clam quilting. She chose for the later, a bubbly quilting style which emphasizes the modern flair of her creation. It was interesting to quilt something a little less obvious on this very Christmasy quilt. I really love how it turned out!
And the quilt backing is not to be missed! It’s so delightfully simple and clever.
Dorothy quilt by Sarah
Here’s another checkerboard creation, this time based on the Dorothy pattern by Penelope Handmade. It’s easy to see how this pattern got its name!
The sky is truly the limit when quilting something like this. Because of the simple, repeated shapes and tonal woven fabrics (rather than prints), this quilt would be lovely with a wide variety of quilting textures.
Sarah opted for Feather Meander, which is a soft, organic pattern. It flows across the quilt, reappearing in the abundant negative space.
This quilt is an example of what I consider medium quilting density. Medium density balances the goals of durability and softness. It’s my go-to density for all quilts, unless a customer indicates a different preference or I feel that the quilt style calls for something more intensive.
