Under the Maple Tree!

Celebrate the splendid transformations of the season with this lively quilt. The tousled leaves and twinkling patchwork recalls the grandeur of light and breeze under the canopy.

Come sew-along over six weeks, starting October 6th!

Sew your scraps or sew fat quarters - the choice is yours. You know that I am a fan of the scrap quilt, and this one is ideal for your 2” and 2.5” squares. If you’ve got stacks of smallish scraps and have been wondering what to do with them, here is your ticket!

Leaves are beautiful no matter how you sew them! Pair similar colors for a calm analogous color scheme (the pattern shows you how), or mix all those scraps together all-colors-in. I made both kinds of leaves, following my muse and my scraps. The result is surprisingly attune with nature where pattern and chaos so often intersect.

So start cutting your scraps and order your background fabric! In a few weeks we’ll start sewing, but you don’t have to wait to dive into those scraps.

The pattern calls for 4 yards of background fabric for a 64” square, throw-sized quilt and 2/3 yards of the accent fabric (the yellow fabric in my case). Solids are a good idea for both of these fabrics, if you’ll be sewing a scrap quilt. The traditional blocks punctuate the wild, scrappy leaves with delicious simplicity.

I’m really looking forward to sewing another version of this quilt during our sew-along, and this time with a calm, autumnal palette. After making mockups of several variations, I’ve come to feel that this quilt offers lots of possibilities, also for a springtime celebration. If you’ll be using fat quarters to sew your quilt, you need just 9 fat quarters for the leaves.
