How delightfully indulgent to return to a pattern I’ve already sewn. Like nestling into a pretty cafe corner with an old friend, joy bubbles up in me from a complete knowing that our time together will be sweet.
When I get to lead a collaborative charity quilt with my local chapter of do. Good Stitches, I often choose to return to an existing pattern. In that safety and familiarity I also find room to explore, to look at a pattern afresh. What might I do entirely differently this time?
The idea has firmly lodged in my head to sew a Pas de Deux quilt with my bee mates this February. That’s ambitious because Pas de Deux is a modern, interlocking sampler quilt with a variety of techniques. Plus, it’s big! Ok then, I’ve concocted a plan for a slightly smaller Pas de Deux rendition and marked out bite-sized elements for my collaborators. I will happily sew a little extra to allow it all to come together!
More details soon. For now, the first patchwork ensemble. I’m excited to be able to use lots of navy blue scraps in this work, which are oh-so-abundant in my stash, including a bunch of 5” charm squares by Zen Chic.
Pas de Deux was designed to be sewn from scraps. True to that ethos, I add aqua, pale sky and green to the mix - everything from my scrap drawers.
And enjoy a peaceful afternoon cutting, sewing and arranging patchwork, following my own pattern from 2020. Nice and easy that.

Stitched in Color fans might recognize Postage Stamp Stars in the making. I love this patchwork ensemble so much, that I sewed a whole quilt of it once upon a time. Still, the color and value relationships used in a scrappy Postage Stamp Stars (as I’m doing here) is still my favorite. Maybe I need to sew another whole quilt of Postage Stamp Stars someday, but more like this.
Ta da! Here is the project seed for our charity rendition of Pas de Deux. I hope that my bee mates will be inspired to take part.
Next week I’ll be back with another installment in this quilt and an explanation of my color concept too. Fun, fun!
beautiful colors and really lovely block. I believe this idea will be very inspiring to your bee mates, Rachel.
And again Rachel I marvel at your skill with colour, I can only watch with complete envy.
