Do you know what I love? January. It’s not the most flashy month, but it has so much potential and wide open space.
In the sewing room, I have a lot of energy this month to sort and tidy, especially if that means using up my fabric scraps. That’s why I wanted to sew this project in January. I’m loving the process! How about you?

WEEK 2 GOAL
12 Scrap Cabin blocks
Here comes another batch of 12 Scrap Cabin blocks, which is equal to 3 Scrap Cabin Clusters. To get started, I arranged my week 1 blocks on my brand-spanking-new design wall and then chose colors for my next cluster.
To be honest, I was in a lot of doubt at this stage about the direction of my quilt. The first three blocks didn’t look fantastic together, in my opinion, and I was tired of being hemmed in by sewing strictly complementary color pairs.
I wanted something that felt fresh and totally cheery. That longing was expressed in this aqua and bubblegum pink cluster. It’s sugar sweet! I also got a kick out of incorporating playful low-volume scraps like those VW buses and the baby dolls.
I definitely benefit from a clear sense of direction when sewing patchwork quilts. I’m not a “mystery quilt” kind of person, and this project was feeling too much like a shot in the dark. That’s why I pulled colors for a bunch of new blocks at this point.
After a fun hour or so of fabric play, I felt confident and excited to keep sewing!
My next block was baby blue and lemon yellow. These two are almost complementary, but in washed-out shades that feel springy. Gotta love that princess (Heather Ross fabric)!
I am quite happy with all three of my week 2 Scrap Cabin clusters. Their pastel tones are lightening up my quilt and giving it that bright and cheery vibe that I wanted.
Here are all my blocks so far. How are yours coming along?

Can I start the sew along today? I've been watching and reading. It's a snow day in Missouri, US, and I'd like to reduce my scraps along side your other participants.
