Trellis patchwork
2026 Tapestry Garden Sampler
Dutch homes tend to have small gardens where vertical space is just as important as the planting beds. Fences or brick walls are often greened with ivy and you might find clematis, jasmine or climbing rose rambling over a trellis placed beside the door.
When I sketched my Tapestry Garden quilt sampler, I saw the patchwork simply as geometric beings. It was only afterwards that I made the garden connection and noticed the trellis in this tall patchwork group with its criss-crossing structure and framed flowers. And just as a trellis is often a focal point in a garden, this particular patchwork group is designed to stand out in the overall quilt design.
Here are the patchwork groups which I have already shared. The diamond patchwork at top is Patio, and underneath you’ll find Coneflowers and Thorn. Trellis belongs in the gap between these groups.
I auditioned several dark value fabrics for the star roll in Trellis. I wanted a fabric that is dark and strong so that it creates a visual anchor for the quilt.
With this group I am using one consistent dark value fabric (black/pink) and a consistent medium value fabric (yellow). Opting for repetition instead of using misc. fabrics makes the patterns in this group visually stronger and more restful. A fun, scrappy quilt does sometimes need moments of rest!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! These beautiful fabrics and holiday patterns will fill your home – or a lucky someone’s heart – with a warm and cozy glow. Perfect for the handmade holiday season!
But there is one element of this patchwork group that is more scrappy. That’s the low value fabrics that fill in the space between the flowers and the trellis structure. It’s a fun chance to fussy cut a few low value cuties and mix things up with pattern and shape!
Trellis is simple patchwork, sewn in vertical columns. It goes together in a snap!
Now the question is… which group shall I sew next? I’m very curious to see how this quilt turns out. Each patchwork group is individually so satisfying to sew. Will the finished quilt tell a cohesive story or become a delightfully unpredictable patchwork ramble, like a lush jungle garden? I do wonder.

Tapestry Garden is my 2026 block-of-the-month program, where you will sew one patchwork group each month as the year unfolds. Each group is unique and some will be developed further into bonus quilt patterns, exclusively available to Tapestry Garden members! As a value-focused quilt, Tapestry Garden is easy to translate to your fabric stash or scraps.

The trellis piece is a game changer. I was looking for a table runner as a gift and this is perfect. As always I love your ideas. Loving the cornflower one too and plan to tackle that after the holidays.
I love your commentary on how you put the quilt together.I find it extremely helpful in understanding why it works.
