Under the Maple Tree quilt
in warm, autumn tones
Yesterday was a beautiful autumn day. The weather was gentle, the sky clear and the forests still shining with colorful leaves. I set out for a walk in the Twentse countryside to photograph my latest finish.
Tucked between traditional farmhouses and wide cow pastures are public paths for taking in the nature. In one area where the land gets boggy, a raised boardwalk cuts through the landscape offering a perspective just perfect for photographs.
My Under the Maple Tree quilt is finished and I do so love how it turned out! It’s a bit busy and wild, like nature itself, and layered with various tones from subtle to glowing to deep dark.
I’m even pleased that the Art Gallery Sweet Macadamia background fabric has two slightly different tones. The effect is a sort of dappled background, that again reminds me of light filtering through branches.
For the quilting I used continuous eight again. It’s sweet, rounded shapes soften all these fancy points. For binding I used Art Gallery Cinnamon - same as for the Sunlight and Breeze blocks. These simple fabric choices give the quilt a restful, warm background, so that the leaves themselves become the story.
Things got more saturated with the quilt backing. I used up leftovers from previous quilt backings and from piecing the quilt top.
I’m especially enjoying how that vibrant orange Carolyn Friedman fabric contrasts with the dark burgundy fabrics I had picked up from Floyd the Fox, a German fabric shop, earlier this fall.
This quilt has a serene beauty that really suits the season. It is listed today in my Handmades shop, in hope of finding a cozy new home.
But first a few more photos in the last of the setting sun…
Wishing you a splendid autumn!

Beautiful! It is whispering in the wind, "come snuggle with me."
Beautiful! It seems you were just piecing the top and now it is completely quilted and bound, and you started a new quilt. You are very fast.
