Under the Maple Tree: Week 3
beter late than never

WEEK 3 GOAL
Sew 15 Maple Leaf blocks
Yikes, I’m late! Actually, I was early, because I finished my maple leaf blocks for this week before going away for the weekend. But then I lost my camera - left my whole camera bag behind on a train! Waaaah. Guess I was traveling with too many bags, eh? Thanks to one airhead moment, all my photos and my trusty camera disappeared - poof. So sad.
Today I’m back home and can snap a few new pics with my phone. This is how I left my work table. These little squares are still patiently waiting for their turn to become maple leaf blocks. I’m looking forward to getting back at it!
Funny enough, my favorite leaves are those dark ones. I appreciate the dramatic touch that they give to this serene autumnal palette.
This is what I have so far. That’s 30 leaves and the Sunlight blocks shining through. I like it, but maybe it’s still a little flat for my tastes? I am a more is MORE person, and this quilt is a bit reserved. Shall I add a bold red/orange leaf or two?
I’m feeling inspired by these incredibly vibrant mushrooms, spotted in the Dutch Drenthe countryside. Now, my leaves wouldn’t be quite this bold, but I think a touch more fire could add something good.

Good morning Rachel! Your quilt along has prompted me to take a really close look at the turning fall leaves and appreciate all the colors and light play I am seeing. Thank you for giving me the inspiration to better appreciate the fall spectrum of reds, golds, rust and soft greens. I think what I am seeing in your color scheme for this quilt is not leaves on a tree sparkling in the sunlight, like the multi-colored version on the cover, but fallen leaves scattered on the forest floor -- almost like the photo of Elora and the mushrooms. Your colors and leaves are beautiful and give a feel of late autumn, and maybe you are channeling some sadness with this new version? I think you mentioned that in one of the colorways you produced for inspiration a few weeks ago. either way, it's beautiful and your work is wonderful. I am working on a version using Marcia Derse Sketchbook 21 fabrics with several others thrown in including some shimmering Oakshot colors. Hope your week is off to a good start. I can't believe we are only a month away from Thanksgiving!
Ohhh and this photo of you and Elora is beautiful
