building up beauty

WEEK 4 GOAL
Sew 10 Breeze blocks
Okay, let’s mix it up again. This week I invite you to take a break from stitching leaves to sew the Breeze blocks. Breeze is that fancy triangular block which serves as a side setting triangle in the Under the Maple Tree quilt. If you’re sewing a throw-size quilt, you’ll need 10 Breeze blocks in all.
I started Breeze by sewing the HST blocks in batches. I guess I like to get the hardest part out of the way first, haha. These tiny HST blocks are fiddly, but they sure do make our finished patchwork twinkle.
With my first Under the Maple Tree quilt, I completed Breeze one block at a time. I carefully laid out the pieces and then assembled in rows.
Another method is to sew identical row elements in batches. That’s how I approached it this time. As such, I could sew 10 of the same pairs together one after another, which felt more efficient. Here are my stacks of prepped row elements, ready to be joined further.
Since I worked in batches, all 10 blocks were finished at once. That was exciting!
Be sure to sew with scant 1/4” seams, as these blocks have so many small pieces. You will easily end up with too-small blocks if your seam allowances are too big.
Important! On page 12 of the pattern, I’ve arranged the Breeze block elements correctly in the first photo. Unfortunately, I mixed up the orientation of the 3rd and 4th HST blocks from row 1 in subsequent photos. Oops! For your reference, the Breeze blocks in this blog post are all correct.
Now I can add these blocks to my growing maple tree story! Here’s to building up beauty one piece at a time.
