a Windfall
inspiration from the elements
I am creating a collaborative charity quilt made up of random log cabin blocks. I love it when new blocks arrive in the mail! It’s a pleasure to put them up on my design wall with the others, and allow the work to grow organically.
Last weekend was unbearably hot in The Netherlands. Truly unusual. At night I opened all my windows and doors so that the cool air could blow through. Well, blow it did, and wiped nearly all the quilt blocks off the wall…
That was frustrating, of course, but also a gift. Starting over so often is. When I put them back up, I arranged the blocks with a large space in the upper left corner. In that space I would like to see a gigantic new block!
Here we go. I’m starting with a larger center square and shooting for a vertical, rectangular shape. The first two rounds are from my scrap drawers, but the final, large-scale print is yardage: Anna Maria’s Welcome Home in Chicago Breeze.

Ta da! It certainly turned out Big. I love the color and the surprising scale, but immediately sense that some balance is necessary.
So I’ve added the same Chicago Breeze fabric to a bee mates’s log cabin block, destined for the bottom right corner of the quilt.
Yes! This is definitely going somewhere. I can’t wait to receive the last blocks from my bee mates so that I can finish composing this quilt!

I’m look forward to learning how you make all of those beautiful but different-size blocks fit together. What a luscious collection of blue ripples!
That is beautiful and it is look well balanced
