Lots of my quilts are made with no end goal in mind. It can be wonderful to sew without parameters, just for the pure pleasure of it. This time though, I’m making a quilt for my bed. A quilt for a new home and for my new life with Aart. Reason enough to be sewing!
Our room is painted and the floor is freshly laid… it’s time for a bed and a quilt, don’t you think?
I’ve been sewing sashing for my Deco Bloom quilt, which includes this snowflake-ish shape at the sashing cross points. Here is my original snowflake concept, with a white square connecting shape and an “empty” center.
That combination of shape and value never felt quite right, so I eventually resorted to patchwork surgery. That’s when you unpick batches of patchwork to reimagine the possibilities.

Simply the best selection of modern wideback fabrics around! Finish off your quilt quickly and easily with a 108” wide backing fabric from my friends at Dragonfly Quiltworks.
My new snowflake shape is less eye-catching. It has a gray connecting shape and gray-blue, filled center. These gray-blue colors coordinate with the wall and door paint colors in our bedroom. I think that the original snowflake was too white given all the little white squares nearby. The new version blends a bit better.
See what I mean?
I’ve completed eight Deco Bloom flower blocks, which is just half of what I need. Now that I’ve made big progress on the sashing, it’s back to those blooms.
Luckily, I can sew this quilt without a design wall, since mine is still buried behind Elora’s cabinets. Do you think Aart will mind if I have a design floor instead? Nah, he’ll love it ;)
Rachel! Your work is absolutely gorgeous. That’s a million dollar quilt! Are you paper-piecing the sashing intersections? And hand sewing them?
Please please please tell me you will release this as a pattern 🙏
