Dreaming, Sketching, Stitching
on the way to a new quilt
Take a gander, friends…
Eeeeee! It’s definitely time to indulge in this amazing set of fabrics from Anna Maria Textiles. I’ve just tossed them around on my table, but here is an image from Anna Maria for a better overview.
This is a fat quarter set that mixes fabrics from a variety of her collections: Allegory, Overdressed, Check Mates and her daughter’s collection, Yesterday. There are a few colorway options, but I chose the Vintage palette, which leans towards soft, dusty colors.

It’s been awhile since I started my design process with a set of fabrics, rather than using scraps or starting with the quilt design itself. As I begin to investigate possibilities, I notice that I want a patchwork style that uses large cuts so that the fabrics will show off. I prefer little-to-no background fabric.
I also ask myself what would feel good to sew. This time I’m craving repetitive, non-improv patchwork. I want to relax into cutting and sewing without making many decisions along the way.
The answer is right before my nose! These sketches (top left) inspired by the Arches patchwork from Positivities fit the bill nicely. I quickly expand the idea into a full quilt sketch on the facing page.
The rectangle-shaped blocks in my sketch remind me of gem stones. Each stone is “faceted” with triangles at the corners. I could use these blue solids for the triangles, to give the busy prints a little breathing room. Plus, I have soooo many dark blue solid scraps. I guess I can’t resist including scraps, ha!
My first blocks are finished and looking mighty fine. I think this plan will suit Anna Maria’s fabrics nicely. Onward!

Onward indeed Rachel. This quilt is going to be another beauty. You made a pretty design and it's perfect for these farics.
Oh, these first two are so pretty! Love where this is headed.
