Kids are free from school in the Netherlands for one week each February. It’s called the crocus vacation, but rarely do any flowers pop up so soon. Usually it’s still winter-cold, making this vacation a nice time to stay home and simply unwind, with no holidays or happenings looming on the calendar.
Last week, Elora and I took advantage of her crocus vacation to make a project for her room: a fabric-wrapped wreath. I already had all the ingredients on hand.
See those pretty paper flowers? She used to lay underneath them, talking to them (see the video at the bottom of this baby Rora post). When she outgrew the mobile, I saved the flowers. At last they come to good use!
And it just so happens that 8-year-old Elora selected fabric for her wreath that is leftover from when I made 2-year-old Elora this dress. So goes the circle sweetly round.
And, I agree - it’s adorable fabric! This is Trixie by Heather Ross, circa 2019. I folded and cut strips on the bias for wrapping round the foam wreath core. After sewing the strips together, I pressed one long edge under for a nice, finished edge.
Wrapping the wreath was easy-peasy. I started and ended with an office staple to keep everything secure.
Next Elora selected flowers in her favorite colors…
which I secured to the wreath with straight pins.
She was very enthusiastic about the whole process! This was a great project for a child of her age: simple, fast, and full of fun choices for her to make.
At this age more is more is more, so we added a little extra dazzle in the form of white, miniature pompom trim. The finished wreath is, dare we say it, perfectly delightful and now proudly hanging in her room!
I’m glad that this crocus vacation helped to create time for such moments. When I homeschooled my children we had so much quality time together. I do miss that since Elora goes to school; but, of course, there are advantages too, for both her and I.
Today she returned to school with gusto, peddling away on her bicycle with a happy smile. She is growing up fast, my little Dutch girl!
What a beautiful daughter 💕
What a nice project to work on together with sweet memories attached. This turned out cute and of course the fabric is pretty.
