from Palette to Patchwork
the origin of a quilt
Thanks for your reactions to my ideas for a dramatic pink bedroom. Fabrics gathered, I am eager to start on a quilt for my future room. But what kind of patchwork would I like I sew?
When the possibilities feel completely wide open, I often flip through my quilt sketchbook or browse favorites on Instagram. Soon the wheels start turning. Here are some creations which inspire me as I think on this project:
@LateSummerFlowers Simple colors, intriguing irregular grid. It’s repetitive and yet not.
@BlueElephantStitches the sweetest coin quilt. Many colors, but an overall soft vibe from the many low volumes.
@ThenCameJune her Peanut Butter quilt is simple, yet so good. I like how the consistent solid squares are highlighted with flecks of color.
Do you notice a pattern? For this project, I’m drawn to simple patchwork. Uncomplicated, repeated shapes + unpredictable color play are inspiring me. I want most of the quilt to be soft printed fabrics, with the colorful solids woven through. So, how about a coin quilt?
Oh my goodness, YES!

Quilt Sandwich
A special combination of fabrics is such a joy to sew! At Quilt Sandwich they pride themselves on their one-of-a-kind Curated Bundles. Maybe one of these lovely bundles will inspire your next quilt?
This is gorgeous, and oh-so-easy to sew. I love how the different-length repeats create a random vibe in the quilt, while the alternating fabrics anchor everything with a reassuring and predictable mood.
I am cutting 3” wide strips of fabric and sewing them as pairs. Sometimes my pairs are low contrast; other times with more contrast. Usually I pair a solid with a print, but one in every four or so pairs is made up of two solids. After sewing the strips, I subcut them 4.5” wide, stack the coins and sew again to create a coin stack.
My favorite part is arranging the coin stacks on the design wall!
I am totally in love with this palette. Using all the Tilda Solids in pink, red, magenta and peach gives a nice variety of sophisticated tones. This patchwork is feeling so feminine! I have to watch out for the red fabrics though, as they really grab for attention.
Onward with special emphasis on soft prints and low contrast combinations.

You could also think of a simpler design this way .. an offer of respite after all you've gone through. You need some calm and predictability in your new space. This design will be perfect for that!
I am a traditional quilter at heart although I dabble in art quilts. I enjoy simple shapes using African fabrics. It gives the shapes a whole different vibe. Your work is beautiful.
