What’s that? You still have fabric scraps? They do have a mind-boggling way of multiplying, and aren’t we glad! Scrap quilts are such fun to sew.
Well friends, I have good news. Let’s kick off the new year together by busting some scraps in a brilliantly efficient manner, if I do say so myself.
Remember this? It’s my Crocus Scrap Cabin quilt. I am totally jazzed to sew another!
You have been patiently waiting for this pattern for four years - wowzers! I’m going to oblige with a complete pattern release next week. The pattern will have all the details you need to sew this 66” square quilt in a convenient PDF format. This one uses your string scraps in all kinds of widths and lengths!!! And if you have few scraps, you can go for the adorable 30” baby quilt version - - - or, maybe it’s better to go fabric shopping? Yeah, probably that. ;)
As part of my Color Mentor series, the Scrap Cabin pattern offers clear patchwork how-to’s served with a generous side of color and fabric-placement advice. When I write these patterns, I aim to reverse-engineer my thought process in creating the original quilt. How did I plan colors and select fabrics? What guided my process and how can I help you on a similar journey, interpreted with your own fabrics and style?
The Scrap Cabin pattern has a choose-your-own adventure aspect. These blocks are very versatile, as they are made up of two main colors, plus neutrals. That makes them so easy to reinterpret! My original quilt was inspired by a calm, consistent analogous palette; but my next one is going to have a spicier energy with a complementary palette and more variety. I wonder which route you would take: calm analogous or feisty complementary? We’ll talk more about those choices soon.
I really think you can sew this whole quilt with whatever scraps you have on hand! It’s just so easy to use scraps of any random size. However, if you are new to quilting and/or just don’t have many lighter scraps, you may need a boost in that department. Together with some of my fabric shop sponsors, we’re preparing low volume bundles ideal for sewing a Scrap Cabin quilt. I’m excited to share all the details and kick-off giveaways later this month.
I hope you’ll be sewing along with us in January! The pattern will release December 13th so that you have plenty of time to gather fabrics and make space on your sewing table. Sign up now for special sew-along emails so you won’t miss a thing!
If you can’t wait to start, begin honing in on what sort of color energy appeals to you in this season: a peaceful one or something more energetic. Which one makes you most happy? Which one delights your senses? Feeling uncertain? Have no fear; that’s what the pattern is for! Still, it never hurts to begin day-dreaming. You never know what delicious inspiration may strike.
I have scraps and I am drowning in them. But I am scared of random and I just got your book of color. I need to play with color in 2025. I think I can???? This would be a great exercise for me and color................................................................. Lets see who wins lol
I really love this and am totally going to join. I haven't done a Sew-Along very often because I don't love most match-matchy quilt patterns. Show me a scrappy pattern and I swoon!! So thank you SOOOOO much for this. Just to get myself a bit more organized. What will the longest strip need to be for the block? Thanks and I can't wait! http://thatfabricfeeling.com
