I’d love to start showing you around my new home, but everywhere I look it’s still not finished. You know how it is after you move in - there are layers and layers of tasks. Until the artwork and curtains are hung, it’s not yet quite there.
Well, I’ve decided to show you into my sewing room anyways. This is the blank canvas version, sort of a before. The basics are in place, but there are lots of pretty things yet to happen.
Welcome to my space! When you step in, you see my writing desk framed on a great big white wall. You will see that great big white walls are a theme in this space, haha. That particular one behind my desk is destined to be wallpapered, so that color and design welcome one properly.
To the left is my sewing room, and I couldn’t be happier with the light in this space! As long as it is day, this room is bright and inviting. My sewing table is set up in the center, so that I can access it from each side. My design wall belongs on the walls to the right, where Elora’s cabinets and piano are temporarily residing. (We’re still waiting on her wallpaper to arrive, so that we can finish her room and move in the last of her furniture.)
I like having my fabrics out on shelves and in easy reach of my sewing table. All the better to work with! My scraps live in the drawers under the ironing station. And the wall above the ironing station? That definitely needs a quilt!
I’ve been using Ikea pegboards for years to keep my tools and notions at hand. As soon as those boards go up, I feel so much more organized and free to sew.

Did you know that 2025 is Jane Austen’s 250th birthday? These soft and pretty fabrics are inspired by Emma, one of Jane’s most beloved novels. Find the complete collection, plus more Jane Austen fabrics at Quilt Sandwich!
Opposite from my sewing space is an adjoining room which is the perfect size for my longarm. The space can be closed off with sliding doors, but I usually keep it wide open. Since privacy is not an issue, I plan to remove the blinds between these rooms to make it feel cleaner and brighter.
And the blinds on this window would also go, ideally. A roll shade would be nicer. But I’m not complaining! I’m so grateful that this room fits my longarm - a true anomaly in Dutch homes. And there’s space besides for storage and such.
I’d like to hang a larger quilt in the longarm room, but I’m not quite sure where: above this notions dresser or behind the longarm itself. The spot above the dresser is horizontal, which suits the quilt that I have in mind. On the other hand, the space behind the longarm is huge and totally empty. But sometimes an empty wall is a good thing, particularly when photographing quilts on the longarm. Choices, choices.
I’ll be sure to have you over for another visit, when the space has been decorated. Thanks for stopping by!
Love your sewing room! So much light....lovely! I love those IKEA pegboards. I found one at a yard sale for $2 on Saturday and it has some clips and hooks! I'm currently figuring out where to hang it. Inspired by you!
Your new studio is sew bright and beautiful, Rachel! All that natural light coming from those extra large windows makes it a fabulous place to spend hours designing, cutting and sewing your quilts!
