a dresden block design

Earlier this year I explored a quilt idea when I was open for spin-off patterns for the Tapestry Garden club. I was thinking of the Coneflower and Daisy blocks, both dresden block types.

These blocks are so fun to make! What if I created a garden scene of blooming blocks in various sizes?

Here is my abstract flower field sketch. There are full dresden flowers in large and small, plus the quarter dresden flowers, arranged both square and on point. Simple stems add movement and interest.

But what got me most excited was the background layout. I would use irregular block sizes and a vertical color wash over the quilt. At the bottom of the quilt the background colors would be green, while at the top of the quilt the backgrounds would be blue.

Ultimately I realized that this quilt would be too complex as a spin-off quilt pattern for the Tapestry Garden club. Darn. But, that doesn’t mean that I can’t enjoy sewing it myself! The time is ripe. I’ve chosen the above background fabrics for my color wash. The blues will land up in the sky, while the greens will give grounding for the flower stems.

And my dresden flowers? I’m going for purple with yellow or yellow-orange centers for a pop of contrast. I think that the overall impression will be soft and peaceful, since the main quilt colors are analogous: blue, purple and green.
